Ancestry Indian Census Collection

Carroll County was created in 1825-1826 as a result of the Treaty of Indian Springs. It was named for Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Carroll County is located in the west central section of Georgia on the Georgia-Alabama state line and is approximately 49 miles west of downtown Atlanta, 95 miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and 100 miles east of Birmingham, Alabama. The county seat is Carrollton.

Settlers were drawn to the area by the prospects of good farming due to the rich soil. Others came looking for the once abundant amount of gold in the northern part of the county. The Carroll mines were once much celebrated.

Early settlers included Hinche P. Mabry, W. G. Springer, Joseph Chambers, John Robinson, Giles S. Boggess, John Griswold, and William H. Mallery.

Famous actress Susan Hayward lived in Carroll County during the height of her career and is now buried there.
