Notes for JOANNA E. TROUTMAN:
"A Georgia girl, whose second husband was William Green Vinson of Byron, is honored in Texas by a statue of a young woman with a needle and thread in her hand and a Lone Star Flag close by. Joanna Troutman had designed and made a silk flag to be carried by Georgia volunteers in the war between Texas and Mexico in 1835-36.
This regiment was organized at Macon in September 1835 by Mirabeau B. Lamar, a Columbus newspaper publisher, who later became the second president of the Republic of Texas.
Hiram Bainbridge and Balsora (Ellis) Troutman, with their children, Joanna and John Fielding, lived at "Elmwood" plantation southeast of Knoxville, Georgia. The Troutmans owned the stage-coach inn on the Post Road across from the courthouse.
When the soldiers, 150 strong, camped near the inn, Joanna was so deeply stirred by the talk of oppression and tyranny that she longed to be of help in the Texas cause. Using two of her handsome silk gowns - one white and the other blue - she created a flag with a large blue star on a field of white.
Next morning on the steps of the inn, she presented her flag to Lieutenant Colonel Ward.
Three months later the volunteers arrived in Texas and unfurled Joanna's flag in Velasco. Blustery winds caught the flag in the halyards as is was being lowered, tearing it so badly that it could not be brought down.
The first convention of the Texas Congress unanimously adopted the Lone Star Flag. General Memecan Hunt, first minister from the Republic of Texas to the United States, enroute to Washington, stopped at the state capitol in Milledgeville. He delivered a package to Governor Schley, containing General Sanata Anna's silver service. It was presented to Miss Troutman as a token of appreciation.
Joanna Troutman's home "Elmwood," in whose garden she was buried, was still standing in 1972 as restored by the Wade Seaglers of Forsyth. One of her step-grandsons, William Green Vinson, Jr. of Byron, inherited her mahogany fourposter bed.
In October 1905 the LADIES HOME JOURNAL had an article "Has Texas Forgotten?" Mrs. Louis L. Brown, regent of the Governor Treutlen Chapter DAR, wrote to Governor Colquitt of Texas who was also a Georgian. For several years there was correspondence and investigation about Joanna. In 1913 the House of Representatives and the Senate of Texas passed Concurrent Resolution No. 8, whereby Joanna (Troutman) Pope Vinson was formally declared the designer of the Lone Star Flag of Texas. It was resolved that her remains should be re-interred in the State Cemetery." [Source: History of Peach County, Georgia, Governor Treutlen Chapter, D. A. R., 1972]
