| The above building is the Irwinton Masonic Lodge. It was erected in 1946 by J. M. HALL, F. WILLIAMS, J. C. JACKSON, O. W. BELL, and W. L. COUNCIL. The Grand Master was J. H. WILKINSON. A bit of backgound: Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest fraternal societies. The lessons Freemasonry teaches in its ceremonies have to do with moral values and the acknowledgement, without in any way crossing the boundaries of religion, that everything depends on the providence of God. Freemasons feel that these lessons apply just as much today as they did when it took its modern form at the turn of the 17th century. Although all Freemasons are required to profess and continue in a belief in a Supreme Being, and their ceremonies include prayers, Freemasonry is not in any way a substitute for religion. It has and can have no theological doctrines, it offers no sacraments, and it does not claim to lead to salvation. Basically, a Freemason is encouraged to do his duty first to his God (by whatever name he is known) through his faith and religious practice, then to his family and those dependent on him, then to his neighbour through charity and service. [For further reading about Freemasonry, I recommend The Freemasons: A History of the World's Most Powerful Secret Society.] From a Genealogical standpoint, if your ancestor was a Mason, you may have a bit of an insight to his belief system. You surely would have an idea of the social life of said relative. This knowledge can lead to even more information from extensive records kept by this organization. The Irwinton Masonic Lodge is still in use. Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month. It is located off of Highway 57 in Irwinton, Wilkinson County, Georgia. |
