MANY IMPROVEMENTS AT ROSE HILL CEMETERY

Council Committee Has Plans to Other Changes

The thousands of visitors to Rose Hill cemetery, taking advantage of the
pleasant weather, the half holiday and the desire to witness the Memorial
day exercises, were much surprised and gratified at the appearance of the grounds.

Several months ago it was thought that the city would be called upon to
select another spot for a cemetery, there being so few available lots on
plots of ground in Rose Hill. The former council terraced an ugly
hillside on the western limits, and in this way added quite a number of
lots, but with the city growing rapidly in population, it was plain that
even more must be had in some way.

Grounds Remodeled.
Alderman Morgan, chairman of the cemetery committee, with the assistance
of Sexton Stroberg, and the hearty cooperation of Alderman Brunner and
Street Superintendent Oxley, went immediately to work in January to not
only rehabilitate Rose Hill, but to remodel the grounds so as to provide a
sufficient number of lots for many years to come. It was planned to
terrace many hillsides and fill in ravines and to utilize the space. The
two small lakes between the lines of Rose Hill and Oak Ridge were filled
in with the dirt taken from the streets in the vicinity preparatory to
paving, and while this at first appeared to take away one of the beauty
spots in the cemetery, so well was the work done and so many additional
lots secured, that the visitors never fail to compliment the improvement.

That there should be a small lake as an attraction to visitors, the
committee is planning one in a ravine below what was known as Crystal
spring. A brick wall will be built across the little natural gorge, to be
utilized as a dam and to form a pool, not only fed by the water from the
old Pearson spring, but by the water from other springs that come tumbling
down like a tiny cascade into the little lake.

Concrete Bridges Put In.
At convenient points neat and substantial steps have been built, and
wooden bridges are being replaced by those of concrete.

All over the grounds there are evidences of good work having been done,
and yet the committee has only started with its improvements. They are
working to the paving of the roadways, and before the end of the year
there will be much done along this line.

There are now numbers of beautiful lots, and these are ready to be sold.
Under the law the proceeds from the sales of lots are to be applied to the
improvement of the grounds. It is out of this fund that the paving of the
roadways will be paid for.

Rose Hill was looking its best yesterday.
