| Cherokee Tribune 521 E. Main St. Canton, GA 30114-2805 (770) 479-1441 The Cherokee Tribune, Cherokee County's only local daily newspaper, began serving the community more than 100 years ago. The Tribune, based in Canton, finds its roots in the Cherokee Advance, which was headed by N.N. Edge in the 1880s. The paper changed its name to the North Georgia Tribune while it was operated by Albert Jones and J.D. Foster, owners of the Jones Mercantile Co. Clifford E. "Buster" Owen and Ralph Owen, the great-grandsons of Edge, together ran the paper in the 1940s. In 1973, Otis Brumby Jr., then-president of Times-Journal Inc. and owner of the Marietta Daily Journal, purchased the North Georgia Tribune from the Owens brothers. Neely Young, now publisher of Georgia Trend magazine, was tapped by Brumby to serve as the first editor and publisher of the paper, which was renamed the Cherokee Tribune. |

| The Atlanta Inquirer 947 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. N. Atlanta, GA 30314-2947 (404) 523-6086 This second oldest community newspaper, first published in the summer of 1960, reaches nearly all of the African- American church congregations in the Atlanta Metro community. The early 1960s was a turbulent time in this city's history. It was the heyday of the Civil Rights Movement, and many of those involved in that Movement felt that the established Black Press only printed "safe" Black news that often edited out the truth - leaving a place for The Inquirer. Mr. M. Carl Holman, The Atlanta Inquirer's first editor, filled that need. Then, Mr. John B. Smith came on board in February 1961. |
