African American Biographical Database
The largest electronic collection of biographical information on African
Americans from 1790 to 1950 can be found in the African American
Biographical Database (AABD). The site uses the free Adobe Acrobat Reader
to provide full-text access to the database contents. Vast quantities of
biographical material is derived from the "Who's Who of the Colored Race"
publications. These profiles provide the researcher with excellent
genealogical information and pointers to other primary sources and, in some
cases, a photograph of the subject. Historical text accounts and personal
experience interview transcriptions are taken from a wide variety of
sources. This impressive database is created by Chadwyck-Healey, and is
marketed separately or as a part of the ProQuest collection of electronic
materials. Contact your nearest university or college library, or a large
urban library, to determine if they have access to this important database,
and make a beeline into this intriguing collection of information.
