Wilkinson County, Georgia

Swampland
Opera House

Wilkinson County, the 29th county formed in Georgia, was named for General James Wilkinson, an officer of the Revolutionary War and a native of Maryland. It was created 11 May 1803 from part of the lands acquired from the Creek Indians by the Treaty of Fort Wilkinson (on the Oconee) at which General Wilkinson was a US Commissioner. The county seat is Irwinton. Courthouses were lost to fire in 1829, 1854, 1864, and 1924. The picture below was taken in 2002.

The incorporated cities of Wilkinson County are Allentown, Danville, Gordon, Irwinton, Ivey, McIntyre, and Toomsboro. The Swampland Opera House pictured at the top of this page is located in Toomsboro. It was built in 1916 by Edwin Boone and originally housed the town's main dry goods store. In 1975, Joe Boone, Jr. started the Swampland Opera House as a weekend venue for musicians throughout the southeast. Along with a stage, dance floor, restaurant, and vintage bank and vault, there is a loft area that was once used as a movie theater. Back in the 1980's I was lucky to perform with the "James Gang Cloggers" at the Swampland Opera House. I remember, then, thinking stepping inside was stepping back in time. I'm not sure what remains of this historic property, but it provided me with some wonderful and lasting memories.
